ABOUT NORTHERN SPIRITS

Northern Spirits, a longstanding workshop and showcase dedicated to arts and youth empowerment, is officially returning. Originally founded in 2006 by Sheryl Kimbley, the program was inspired and encouraged by the late Bernice Sayese, whose passion for northern youth continues to guide its purpose.

For over a decade, Northern Spirits played a meaningful role in the lives of young people across northern Saskatchewan. Through music, storytelling, arts mentorship, and hands-on workshops, the program became a safe and inspiring space where youth could explore their talents, build confidence, and begin or continue their own healing journeys. Many participants have credited Northern Spirits as a turning point in finding their voices - both creatively and personally.

After the program lost funding in 2019–2020, Sheryl continued to advocate for its return. This year, the next generation has stepped forward to help Sheryl reignite the vision. LJ and Kyle Kimbley, have been working closely with community partners and organizations - including the Community Arts Mentorship Program, Prince Albert Winter Festival and the Prince Albert Indian & Métis Friendship Centre - have brought Northern Spirits back with renewed energy and purpose.

The relaunched program continues to build on its strong foundation, while expanding its focus to include deeper support in mental health, arts mentorship, cultural connection, and youth empowerment. These pillars will guide this year’s workshop as 60 selected youth gather to learn, create, heal, and grow. Northern Spirits is more than a workshop - it is a movement to uplift northern youth, celebrate their voices, and foster the next generation of community leaders and artists. We are honoured.
